MULTAN, Jan 7: Police on Monday killed five people, three of them in Multan, and one each in Gujranwala and Sheikhupura in encounters.
In Multan, two dacoits were shot dead in an encounter near MDA intersection on Monday night.
According to a press release issued by the Multan SSP, three dacoits had looted Rs85,000 in cash from the house of a Wasa director, Chaudhry Shamim, at gunpoint and sped away on a motorcycle.
Gulgasht police were informed which spotted them near Chungi No 6. But they could not nab them.
Chaliak police saw the three near MDA Chowk. When they asked the dacoit to stop, they opened fire on the police team. Two of the dacoits were killed when police retaliated while their third accomplice escaped in the darkness. The dacoits could not be identified till filing of this report just after midnight.
Two pistols and the snatched money were recovered from the possession of the dacoits.
In the second incident, an alleged proclaimed offender was shot dead in Latifabad on Sunday night, says a press release issued on Monday.
Police claimed that two motorcyclists deprived one Muhammad Hayat of his motorcycle (MNK-1199) at gunpoint near Thokar Band Bosan and sped towards Shujaabad Link Road.
The victim informed police immediately which rushed towards Shujabad Link Road. They spotted the criminals near Nawab Sir Baland Garden. They opened fire on the police party when they were signalled to stop.
Police returned the fire as a result of which one of the tyres of the motorcycle of a dacoit deflated. He left the motorcycle and ran towards nearby fields. He started firing on the police team from the fields. Police returned the fire killing him on the spot. His accomplice managed to escape from the scene.
A pistol was recovered from his possession. He was identified as Awais.
Police claimed that Awais and his accomplice Wasim were involved in many murder and dacoity cases. They were involved in an encounter which took place in Aug 3 last as a result of which one Irum was killed.
Police claimed that she was killed by a bullet fired by Awais with whom she was riding a car. However, autopsy report revealed that she was killed by a bullet which was fired from a distance.
This is the fourth encounter in as many days in which four proclaimed offenders have been killed.
Gujranwala: A man who was sheltering an alleged proclaimed offender was killed in Ferozewala village on Monday. It was reported that PO Kaka Joolaha was sitting at the dera of Hafeez when they raided the place to arrest him. But, Kaka made good his escape firing shots in the air. Hafeez opened fire on the police party, and when police fired in retaliation, he was killed.
But police denied it and said that Hafeez committed suicide.
However, police removed the body to the Civil Hospital for autopsy.
SHEIKHUPURA: The fourth incident took place near Mehta-Souja village in border areas, some 80 kilometres from Sheikhupura in the early hour of Monday.
Later, SSP Shafique Chaudhry told newsmen that following an information about the hideout of proclaimed offender Azhar alias Dauna, the Narang police raided the place. Azhar and his two accomplices opened fire on the police team. Azhar was killed when police returned the fire. His accomplices escaped from the scene, the SSP added.
He said Azhar had killed three policemen in various encounters and 11 other people in dacoity, robbery and kidnap for ransom incidents.
The SSP claimed that he was wanted by Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Lahore and Kasur police.
Police have also recovered huge quantity of sophisticated weapons from his possession.
