KARACHI: Fishermen resent closure of jetty

KARACHI, Oct 20: Fishermen have expressed resentment over the take over of Shamspir jetty and its adjoining land by the Navy, describing it as a move to alter the traditional values and culture of the area, besides causing economic hardship to poor local fishing community.

A meeting of ‘Action Committee for Protection of Historic Rights of Fishermen’ was held in Younasabad, Sandspit, which was participated by Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum Chairman Mohammad Ali Shah, Director, Fishermen Co-operative Society, Haji Younus, a leader of fishermen, Latif Dorai and fishermen belonging to various regions.

Meeting took serious note of the situation at Shamspir, where the local residents had been blocked due to taking control of the jetty and nearby land by the Navy.

They decided to approach all possible forums, including media, to highlight the sufferings caused to local community due to closure of jetty for the public. —PPI
