LANDI KOTAL, Aug 28: The political administration and elders of the Shinwari, Zakhakhel and Shalman tribes have failed to reach an agreement regarding ban on display of weapons in the tehsil.
The authorities convened a jirga of tribal elders at Political Agent’s House to convince the tribesmen for a ban on carrying of weapons in and around Landi Kotal bazaar.
The administration failed to convince the tribesmen, who had reservations about the government’s policy of banning the display of weapons in the tribal areas.
The Jamrud administration had effectively stopped carrying of weapons in the vicinity of the bazaar there.
Dawn has learnt that the Landi Kotal elders had told the assistant political agent that a number of Shinwari and Zakhakhel families had feuds with each other and it was almost impossible for them to be without arms in absence of an effective security force in the area.
The authorities deferred the jirga as they had no immediate security arrangements at hand for those who had feuds.
