Two captives injure each other

GUJRANWALA, Aug 27: Two condemned prisoners injured each other in Gujranwala jail on Wednesday.

The prison authorities suspended another official from service while transferred two others after the clash.

Sources said condemned prisoners Muhammad Azam and Rashid Ahmad, who had enmity were kept in barrack No 1. They attacked and injured each other with some sharp objects and were admitted to the jail hospital.

The authorities suspended Mansha Bhatti from service while transferred Ghulam Murtaza Shah and Khalid.

Meanwhile, Gujranwala central jail deputy superintendent was suspended from service on charge of corruption and inefficiency on Wednesday.

Sources said Deputy Superintendent Farooq Lodhi was responsible for distribution of food among the prisoners.

Headed by DIG prisons Abdul Sittar Ajiz, an inquiry committee found that Mr Lodhi was involved in corruption. He was suspended from service on the basis of the inquiry committee report.

Mr Lodhi is the 16th official who had been suspended from service by the prisons DIG on charges of negligence and inefficiency after two groups of prisoners quarrelled and injured one another.

Sources said jail superintendent Shaukat Nawaz Tiwana had sought two-month extention in his leave on medical grounds.
