FAISALABAD, Aug 18: The district council has expressed concern over the reports of mudslinging against the local governments by the members of the National and provincial assemblies, warning that they (the MPs) should concentrate on legislation instead of claiming their share in development funds for the district governments.
Presiding over a session of the district council on Monday, convener B K Tabish observed that the three-tier system working under the devolution of power plan was going on smoothly. The MPs should not indulge in the “power tussle” for development funds because, he said, it would affect the functioning of the upper and lower houses of the elected representatives.
Through a resolution, the house demanded the local DIG police and the DPO to immediately take action against District Peace Committee chairman Pir Muhammad Ibrahim, who had affixed a green number plate and police hooter on his private car.
According to the resolution, there was no need for the peace or crime control committees in the presence of the Public Safety Commission, which is the only lawful body for this purpose.
On another resolution presented by Advocate Shahid Mahmood, the house asked the DCO to direct the tehsil municipal administrations to immediately arrange mobile vehicles to lift garbage and waste from the city.
The convener also directed the EDO (education) to present a detailed report on the dangerous buildings of schools in the district within shortest possible period so that funds could be allocated for the construction of these buildings.
SURVEY: A joint task force of the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank has launched a survey to get information about the working of the local-government system, including the problems it has been facing.
On the orders of the federal government, several committees have been constituted to provide assistance and information to this fact-finding team.
ARRESTED: The police claimed on Monday to have arrested two criminals after an encounter.
Reportedly, a police team signalled two suspects to halt near Adda Satiana, who opened fire. The police retaliated and the cross fire continued for an hour after which Riaz Baloch and Fayyaz Gujjar were arrested.
The police claimed that the arrested men were wanted in a number of cases of heinous crimes.
