SUKKUR, Aug 12: Three people, including two policemen, were killed and another policeman was injured when armed men opened fire on a police post in the Faiz Mohammad Chakrani village in the limits of the Kotdiji police station on Tuesday.
Police claimed that at least 20 armed men barged into the village, set ablaze several houses and opened indiscriminate fire.
On hearing about the armed men, a police party, led by the in charge, Soho Kanasara police post, ASI Nasrullah, rushed to the area.
On seeing the police, the armed men opened fire as a result of which the ASI, a constable, Dildar, and an unidentified villager were killed on the spot. Another constable, Abdul Qadir, was injured. The armed men fled immediately after the incident.
However, sources from Khairpur told this correspondent that the armed men did not attack the village but they attacked the police post to take revenge for the killing of a Jatoi tribesman by the Kotdiji police sometime back.
They said the tribesman, whose name could not be ascertained, was arrested by the Kotdiji police from Larkana and he was tortured in police custody as a result of which he died.
DEMO: Hundreds of people staged a sit-in on the National Highway near Dharki on Tuesday to protest against the killing of a woman, allegedly in police firing, near the Mari gas field on Monday.
Sukkur range DIGP and Ghotki DPO rushed to the scene and negotiated with leaders of the protesters. They assured them that they would talk to the gas field management and justice would be provided to them. On their assurance, the people called off their protest.
The management has terminated the service of Jamal Nasir, son of Mandhal Shar, who led Monday’s protest.
Mandhal was arrested by the police and two cases of firing and creating law and order situation were registered against him and 36 others at Mirpur Mathelo and Yaro Lund police stations.
Sources said Nasir was severely beaten by the police in custody. Talking to this correspondent on telephone, the DIGP denied that a woman was killed in police firing.
