KARACHI, Aug 6: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan said on Wednesday that improvement in infrastructure was vital to attract investment and that was why the city government was trying to create investment-friendly atmosphere in Karachi.

He stated this during a visit to Landhi Town to inspect work being carried out under the cleanliness and health campaign launched by the city government.

He announced that an amount of Rs0.3 million would be given to each town to undertake cleanliness work in more efficient way and maintained that after this campaign the people of Karachi would witness a beautiful and green city.

The city Nazim said the president and the prime minister had realized the importance of Karachi and they wanted to release more funds for the improvement of infrastructure in the city.

He said he would brief President Pervez Musharraf during his visit to the city starting tomorrow about the mega projects of the city that needed Rs20 billion.

He further said improvement in infrastructure demanded a huge amount of money that could not be provided solely by the city government and that was why the federal government had been asked to release funds in this regard.

Naimatullah Khan maintained there was a need to improve the sewerage system and road infrastructure in industrial areas to persuade investors.

Earlier, the city Nazim inaugurated the plantation campaign in the town by planting a sapling at the main Landhi Road Zamanabad.

He also inspected cleanliness work being carried out in different parts of the town.

Later, the city Nazim accompanied by Nazim, Naib Nazim and officials of Bin Qasim Town inspected cleanliness work in Union Council 9 and at National Highway and Quaidabad.

Meanwhile, the work of cleanliness, pumping out rainwater, disposal of garbage and mud, repair of leakages in water and drainage lines, is in progress in every town and union council.

According to a press release received on Wednesday, the garbage and mud was lifted and areas were cleaned in Al-Falah, Industrial Area of Azizabad, Blocks-4, 16, 7, 15, 9, Gulshan-i- Shamim, Yasinabad, Ancholi, Gulberg Road, Water Pump, Hathi Park, and Dental College situated in Gulberg Town.

The gardens department removed 50 fallen trees from different roads, cleaned and repaired green belts of Moosa Colony, Ziauddin Bridge and Karimabad, besides draining out rainwater from Ziauddin Hospital to Karimabad roundabout, Moosa Colony, Al-Falah and Bhangoria Goth.

The buildings and roads department filled and covered 70,000 square feet of potholes in various areas. Seepage and leakage in pipelines were plugged and repaired in Muhammadi Masjid, Block- 21, Ali Square, Shafiq Colony, Block-17, Dar-ul-Uloom and Block- 13.

The mechanical and electrical department repaired street lights at different locations, and changed fused bulbs and tubes.

MALIR TOWN: In Malir Town, garbage was picked up and disposed off in Jafar-i-Tayyar Society and UC-7, garbage of 710 tons was lifted from Mehran Goth, Taesar Goth and other areas, certain union councils cleared water by sweeping, and pits were filled in Bakra Piri, National Highway, Malir Halt, Malir City and other adjoining areas.

NORTH KARACHI: Special attention was focused on cleanliness in areas of North Karachi Town, where garbage was picked up and disposed off in Sectors 11-C-3, 9, 8, R-116, 7D-2, D-1, Eidgah and Sector 9. Rainy water was drained out from areas in sectors 11-A, 11-C-1, 11-B, 11-A, and 8.

SHAH FAISAL TOWN: Six tons of garbage was lifted from UC-1 to Khokhar Club, eight tons of garbage from and around Abbasia Masjid in UC-2, 12 tons of garbage in UC-3 from A-One Shama Centre, Park Katchra Kundi and adjoining areas, six tons garbage from and near Saba Palace in UC-4, six tons in UC-5 from Mustafai Masjid of Green Town and eight tons of garbage was lifted in UC-7 from Jamia Millia Road, Azimpura and Ghazali Road.

The gardens department removed fallen trees from UCs-2, 3, 4 and 5 and also trimmed existing trees.

GULSHAN TOWN: The cleanliness work was also in progress in Gulshan-i-Iqbal and Lyari Towns, where sewerage lines were cleared.

Seepage and leakage in lines was repaired and heaps of garbage were picked up and disposed off.

Similarly, pits were filled and rainwater was also drained out from roads in SITE Town, Orangi Town, North Nazimabad, Keamari Town, Saddar Town, Bath Island, Sindh Secretariat, Glass Towers, Civil Lines, Arambagh Road, Cantt Station, Napier Road, Khajoor Bazar, Schon Circle, Civil Hospital, Chand Bibi Road, Mauripur Road, Shershah, Boat Basin, Haji Camp, Aiwan-i-Sadar Road and other areas.—PPI
