Three villages inundated

KARACHI, Aug 1: Three villages were inundated when the kutch protective bund, near the Bilawal Khan Sholani village, developed a breach due to sea intrusion.

The breach had developed in Tika to Ochta drain, some 10kms away from Keti Bundar, on Thursday.

Sea water after flooding the three villages had almost reached the Sholani village.

The villagers were trying to contact the officials concerned to get the bund repaired but in vain.

Senator Nisar Ahmed Memon, who was on an extensive tour of the rain and flood-hit areas from Gharo upto Keti Bundar on Thursday, was returning after a visit to Keti Bunder, some 180 kms from Karachi, when he saw some villagers standing near the bund.

The villagers informed him about the situation.

Mr Nisar accompanied the villagers to a public call office in the Bilawal Sholani village and started making telephone calls. He tried to contact the DCO, Thatta, and the secretaries to the governor and chief minister but in vain.

Finally, he contacted Corps Commander Lt Gen Tariq Waseem Ghazi and informed him about the whole situation. The latter assured the former that he would issue necessary instructions to the local authority for sending help to the villagers.

Later, on his directive, army men, led by a brigadier, started plugging the breach.—APP
