KARACHI: Medical varsity for city approved

KARACHI, Dec 27: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan has promulgated the ordinance pertaining to establishment of Dow University of Medical and Health Sciences in the city, official sources said.

The first public sector medical university in the city would initially comprise Dow Medical College, Sindh Medical College and Ojha Institute of Chest Diseases as constituent academic units, the source added.

Dr Ibad, in principle, had approved the establishment of the medical varsity by raising the status of DMC at a meeting held at the Governor’s House on Oct 10, this year.

It was further learnt that Sindh government had agreed to release Rs100 million as seed grant for the university, Rs50 million of which would be released with the promulgation of the medical university ordinance, while another Rs50 million during the new fiscal year.

An official report emphasized that the Dow University would provide better opportunities for the doctors seeking postgraduate education and more trainees of FCPS-II would be inducted at various government hospitals, which would be upgraded to the status of university hospitals.
