Demo held against army takeover

LARKANA, Oct 12: Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) activists took out a procession in Warah here on Sunday to recall the toppling of the Nawaz Sharif government by Gen Pervez Musharraf on Oct 12, 1999.

Sindh PML-N acting president Imdad Chandio led the procession that after marching through different thoroughfares of the town arrived at the Fazil Raho Chowk.

Speaking at the gathering, Mr Chandio, Sarfraz Jatoi, Dad Mohammad Brohi and others criticized President Gen Musharraf for toppling an elected government and termed it a conspiracy against democracy.

They said: “With US President George W. Bush’s departure from power as he is loosing popularity in his country, Gen Musharraf will also go.”

They said to protect their interests and perpetuate their rule, the rulers had handed over the country to the US and operations against pro-Islamic forces were increasing.

HUNGER STRIKE: A group of women and children of the Piyaro Magsi village, Dhamraho police station jurisdiction, observed a token hunger strike outside the press club here on Sunday to protest against police excesses.

Sharifan, Sarwar Khatoon, Khairan, Inayat Khatoon, Hajani and Hubdar Khoso were among those who observed the hunger strike.

Talking to journalists, the protesters alleged that the police had opened fire after raiding their houses and a one-year-old boy had died in the stampede. They said the police had also taken away household articles.

Sources said the police had arrested Jabbar Kori, Sabir Jagirani, Deedar Ali Khoso, Roshan, Abdul Rasool and Lutuf Ali Khoso.

The villagers said the SHO of Dhamraho had also arrested Ghulamullah and Mohammad Saleh Khoso but the police were denying the arrests.
