ISLAMABAD, Oct 7: Army swimmers dominated the first day of the 45th National swimming championship grabbing four gold medals at the Pakistan Sports Complex pool.

Mumtaz Ahmad took the top honours in the 200m freestyle clocking 2:05.50sec leaving behind his teammate Mahboob Khan who was second in 2:06.48 sec while Sikander Khan of Punjab took the bronze in a time of 2:12.03.

Imdad Ali then gave Army their second gold, winning the 200m backstroke event in 2:24.08 secs with Navy’s Muhammad Zahid taking the silver finishing second in a time of 2:26:07 sec. Army’s Faiz Muhammad was third.

The gold in the 200m butterfly also went to Army, their swimmer Muhammad Ibrahim clocking 2:19.07 sec while Naveed Butt of Wapda was adjudged second with 3:18.18 sec after another Wapda swimmer Muhammad Akram was disqualified. The bronze was bagged by Punjab’s Abdul Raheem Waqar.

Army were on top again in the 4x100m final in which Navy were second and Wapda third.

Nine finals are to be held on Wednesday.
