KARACHI: Forger gets nine-year RI

KARACHI, Sept 29: The provincial anti-corruption judge, Aftab Ahmed Khan, sentenced a forger to suffer three different terms of rigorous imprisonment (RI) totalling nine years.

The judge, on Monday, convicted Abdul Ghafoor of making forged registration documents of a truck (KZ-271). However, four officials of the excise and taxation department and a broker in the case were acquitted on benefit of doubt.

Prosecution Inspector Muhammed Musa Mastoi of the anti- corruption establishment appeared on behalf of the state.

The acquitted accused were: Inspector Ijaz Muzaffar, Inspector Ghalib Rehman, senior clerk Iqbal Ahmed, clerk Nadeem Sarwar and broker Nizamuddin.

The judge awarded Abdul Ghafoor a three-year term each under sections 420, 468 and 471 of the Pakistan Penal Code. The judge also fined him Rs100,000 under Section-468 and ordered that the convict would have to undergo an additional one-year term in case of default.

Meanwhile, the additional district and sessions judge, Ms Nuzhat Ara Alvi, sentenced a robber to undergo rigorous imprisonment for seven years.

Accused Suleman along with absconding accused Shahid and Shafique entered the shop of Muhammed Yahya, a carpenter, in Napier police limits on Aug 27, 2001. The intruders opened fire when the carpenter struggled with them. However, they missed the targets and the brother and the employee of Yahya caught Suleman. The two accomplices fled after their abortive attempt.
