PESHAWAR, Sept 28: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) received another setback on Sunday when Jamiat Ulema-i-Pakistan (Noorani group) threatened to quit the alliance if its lone MPA was not given representation in the NWFP cabinet in a week.

Earlier, the JUI-S led by Maulana Samiul Haq had parted ways with the MMA in the NWFP, accusing the Jamaat-i-Islami and JUI-F of ignoring the party in the province.

“We have decided to boycott MMA functions and activities if our demand is not met,” said Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Goldwi, chairman of JUP convening committee.

The JUP provincial convening committee met here on Sunday. Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Goldwi presided over the meeting in which members from 12 districts of the NWFP participated.

Of the 69-member strength of the MMA in the NWFP Assembly, JUP enjoys only one seat, while Maulana Samiul Haq group has two members.

Without mentioning the Jamaat-i-Islami and JUI-F by name Maulana Goldwi told Dawn that the two major partners of the alliance were constantly ignoring his faction in the NWFP.

He said a few days ago the provincial government had promised to give a portfolio to JUP in four days, but the party did not receive any response from the MMA leadership even after the lapse of more than a week.

“Now, we have come to the conclusion to leave the alliance if our demand did not materialise in the next eight days,” Maulana Goldwi said.

He complained that JUP was being ridiculed by the alliance’s major components as it was not given any representation on the district Zakat committees.

The JUP, NWFP chapter, elections would be held in Peshawar on October 19. A three-member committee has been constituted to conduct elections.
