BAGHDAD, Sept 26: The United States on Friday disapproved of the decision by the United Nations to order evacuation of its staff from Baghdad, forcing the world body to agree upon a partial evacuation only.

Sources at the UN said Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s aides had advocated a total withdrawal, but US Secretary of State Colin Powell expressed concern about the impact such a move would have on Iraq.

The outcome was a compromise.—Reuters
