NEW YORK, Sept 25: A group of Kashmiris protested outside the UN headquarters on Thursday while Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee was addressing the General Assembly.

They stayed outside the UN building from 1.00pm to 4.00pm, chanting slogans and holding placards that demanded freedom for Kashmir.

Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai, a local Kashmiri leader who led the protest, said the protesters wanted to show their rejection of the Indian occupation of Kashmir.

“What the Indian Prime Minister does not want the United Nations to know is that Kashmir is the most dangerous place on earth,” he said.

Mr Fai also urged the United Nations to play a more active role in Kashmir and to help resolve the dispute.
