KARACHI, Sept 20: The city government has started the repair and carpeting of roads, damaged by the heavy rains, on emergency basis and claimed to complete the job in two months.

City Nazim Naimatullah Khan inaugurated the emergency programme with the start of road repair and carpeting near Yasinabad Bridge, F.B. Area, on Saturday. The EDO Works and Services, Shoaib Siddiqi; Town Nazim Gulberg, Farooq Naimatullah; Saleem Azhar, Abid Ilyas and officials of works department were also present on the occasion.

The works and services department has completed the survey of rain damaged roads, according to which around 6.6 million square feet of such roads will be repaired.

In this regard, the city government has awarded contract to five well-reputed companies. However, the material used in the repair and patch work will be prepared at the asphalt plant of the city government at rate of 1,700 tons daily. Three asphalt plant of city government located at Mehmoodabad, Mewashah and Sohrab goth would work round the clock for this purpose while the Safora goth asphalt plant would start work from Tuesday. The material prepared in these plants would be distributed in five zones and thus 125,000sq-feet roads will be repaired daily.

The city government has approved an amount of Rs85 million for this purpose and the work on roads will be carried out day and night.

The roads, on which carpeting and repair work will be completed with in a few days, include M.A. Jinnah Road en-route Neti Jeti Bridge to Keamari Port, Shahrah-i-Orangi en-route Banarus Chowk to Islam Chowk, Madina Chowk to Shell Petrol Pump of Mominabad, Faqir Colony Road, Anwar Road en-route Mango Pir Road to Qalandarya Chowk, Jahangir Road, Business Recorder Road, Tezi Road, Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai Road, Shahrah-i-Iraq, Jam Sadiq Bridge to Singer Roundabout, Road Chakora Nullah Pul to Shama Shopping Centre of Shah Faisal Colony, Korangi Crossing to Airbase Korangi Creek, Mango Pir Road en-route Church to Garden signal and Welcome Signboard Pul, Jail Chowrangi to Peoples’ Roundabout near M.A. Jinnah Road, Tariq Road, Shaheed-i-Millat Road to Allahwali Chowrangi en-route Sindhi Muslim Society to Sharea Faisal, Yaseenabad Bridge to Landi Kotal Bridge, Federal Urdu College to Jail Chowrangi and University Road.

On the occasion, the Nazim was informed that monsoon season continued till Sept 15 and it was not advisable to carry out the repair and patchwork till that date. However, the works and services department completed the survey till that date. Contracts for the work had also been awarded by Sept 16, however, the formal patch work started on Sept 20.—APP/PPI
