LAHORE: Lawyers reject package

LAHORE, Sept 20: The Lahore High Court Bar Association on Saturday disapproved the proposed constitutional package handed over to the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal by the government.

LHCBA president Hafiz Abdul Rehman Ansari and other office-bearers rejected the proposal that Gen Musharraf would not be elected by parliament. Rather he would seek a vote of confidence from parliament and the validity of the last year’s presidential referendum would not be questioned.

“The referendum was nothing but an eyewash and was rejected by the nation. The legal fraternity is not willing to accept Gen Musharraf as a president in uniform and it would continue its struggle against the LFO,” Mr Ansari said.

He also criticized the proposal that the LFO provision, regarding the grant of three-year extension to the superior courts judges, would not be reviewed.

Mr Ansari alleged that this decision would undermine the independence of the judiciary as the judges of the Supreme Court, who had availed the three-year extension, would decide the reference to be sent to them by the president for the dissolution of assemblies.
