ISLAMABAD, Sept 16: The Senate chairman, Mohammadmian Soomro, has underlined the need for reinvigorating the OIC with a view to make it a dynamic organization of the Muslim world.

He was talking to the Algerian Ambassador, Issue Seferdjell, who called on him here on Tuesday.

Mr Soomro said the concept of Muslim Common Market would be realized if the Islamic countries utilize their resources and technical know-how in developing cooperation in various fields, including science and technology, education, health, communication and information technology.

He said there existed vast potential in various Islamic countries and they could contribute in strengthening the role of OIC.

Referring to the recent visit of parliamentary delegation to Algeria and its meeting with President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, Algerian Senate Chairman Bensalah and other leaders and observed that the meetings were very fruitful.

He stressed the need for joint ventures with Algeria in various domains particularly in textile, cement, fertilizer and construction industry. He said the two countries had tremendous potential and it would be in the interest of two countries to pool their resources for maximum economic advantages, including information technology, industry, agriculture, science and technology.

The Algerian ambassador told the Senate chairman that the Algerian president was looking forward to meet President Musharraf during OIC Summit meeting scheduled to be held in Kua Lumpur next month. He said Pakistan- Algeria Joint Ministerial Commission meeting likely to be held in December this year wherein progress in strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries would be reviewed and new avenues of understanding explored.

Later, Dr Abdel Mahmood Aboul- Naga, FAO Representative to Pakistan also called on the Senate chairman. During their meeting they discussed matters of mutual interest. The FAO representative appreciated the performance of agriculture sector in Pakistan.
