KHANEWAL, Aug 30: The Khanewal District Council on Saturday passed a resolution unanimously supporting the announcement made by President Pervez Musharraf for the need to build Kalabagh dam and other water reservoirs.
The resolution observed that the construction of more dams for water and power generation was necessary for the agricultural and industrial development in the country.
Earlier, the meeting reviewed progress on the ongoing uplift schemes in the district, the second phase of which would be commenced in October.
Convener Ahmed Nadeem Bodla told the meeting that elected representatives would also be part of recruitment committees set up for deciding appointments in government departments, who would ensure that merit was upheld.
FAISALABAD: The water reservoirs are imperative for the progress and prosperity of the country and the president has taken a just decision in announcing construction of Kalabagh and Bhasha dams.
This was stated by Jamiat Ahl-i-Hadith Naib Amir Maulana Muhammad Yousaf Anwar in a statement issued here on Saturday.
He said that Pakistan was an agrarian country and construction of Mangla and Tarbela dams not only ushered in a green revolution but also paved way for industrialization by providing cheap electricity.
The JI Naib Amir said that various governments after Ayub Khan failed to concentrate on optimum utilization of the available water resources, which paved way for thermal powerhouses.
The completion of Ghazi Barotha project was very encouraging as it would not only provide water for irrigation but also generate cheap hydel electricity, he said. Lauding the president’s stand on Kalabagh and Basha dams, he said that it was indicative of his commitment to national progress and prosperity.
Some myopic elements, he said, were unnecessarily opposing these national projects for their vested interest.
“These multiple purpose dams would not only provide water for the vast stretches of waste lands in provinces but also catalyze the process of industrialization’, he added.—APP
