PESHAWAR, Aug 30: Water and Power Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao has said that fruitful and constructive talks are currently in progress between the government and the opposition on the LFO.

Talking to newsmen after inaugurating Nadra Swift Centre at Nowshera on Saturday, the federal minister said the talks would continue till the desired result were achieved.

To a question about Kalabagh dam issue, Mr Sherpao said that President Gen Pervez Musharraf in his recent statement had underscored the need of evolving consensus on the construction of Kalabagh dam.

He said multi-dimensional projects of national importance could only be undertaken after consensus was evolved.

He said the Sherpao faction of the PPP stood by its previous stand on the Kalabagh dam issue.

Replying to a question about the president’s remarks on the LFO, the minister said he had expressed his views about legal aspects of the LFO. Revival of democracy, general elections 2002 and establishment of governments at the centre and the provinces have had direct bearing on the LFO, he added.

Earlier in Nowshera, Mr Sherpao called for preparing a comprehensive national database on the preparation and issuance of important papers like identity cards, passport and motor registration.

Nadra’s services, he added, could be effectively utilized. He said that establishment of an effective and fast database system about the citizens of the country was the need of the hour.—APP
