KARACHI July 19: Nazim Karachi Naimatullah Khan has said that the city government has initiated work on replacement of sewerage lines and plugging of leakages in water pipelines.
Pointing out that results thereof have started pouring in, the Nazim said, “our planning will be visible to people in the next few years when Karachi will be a neat and clean city”.
Speaking as chief guest at the foundation-stone laying of replacement of sewerage lines in Korangi Town UC-4, costing Rs 5 million, Naimatullah Khan said replacement of sewerage lines would benefit some 1,000 families.
This pipeline which had grown obsolete was causing problems and inconveniencing people, passing through Korangi main road.
The Nazim said that maintenance of sanitary conditions is the responsibility of local government institutions. The city government, towns and UCs understand this responsibility much better.
He recalled that when the city government came into being, Karachi was infested with garbage dumps and the towns lifted garbage lying on open spaces, parks and playgrounds.
Naimatullah Khan said that the city government was try-ing to improve the infrastructure.
He said 50-year-old lines cannot be replaced in one go, and, therefore, the Town Nazims should determine their priorities and replace those lines first which have become totally obsolete and have sagged.
Town Nazim Abdul Jalil said that a lot of work had been done under the leadership of the city Nazim and work was going on speedily on metalling of streets and improvement of sewers.
Meanwhile, the City Nazim, along with Nazim Zahid Saeed and councillor Bilal made a detailed visit to showroom market at Khalid Bin Walid Road here.
PROBE ORDERED: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan has constituted a committee to examine the causes which led to the damage to the right-turn bridge on Sharea Faisal.
The committee has been assigned to identify immediate remedial measures for strengthening of the flyover.
The committee comprises Saleem Azhar, representative of the city Nazim, Farhat Adil, NESPAK; Irshad Nabi, bridge consultant; Amanullah Chachar and Mirza Naveed Ahmed, DOs Works and Services, CDGK; Nisar Ahmed Sario, DO (PA&E) and Mr Khalil, structure engineer.
The committee has been directed to submit its report urgently.—APP
