KARACHI, July 4: The Sindh High Court ordered on Friday production of two accused being held in the city’s Central Prison after their acquittal.

A division bench, comprising Justices S. Ahmed Sarwana and Mushir Alam, also asked the jail superintendent to appear along with the detainees on Saturday. The directive came on two writ petitions moved by the mother and brother of Nawab Khayyam Sarhadi and Mohammad Imran, activists of Harkatul Mujahideen Al- Alami.

They were tried for being in possession of illicit arms and literature detrimental to public peace along with Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Zakir and Aminuddin. All the accused were acquitted by the anti-terrorism court.

Additional Advocate-General Suleiman Habibullah informed the bench that according to the provincial home department, their detention came to an end on June 20 following announcement of the ATC acquittal order.

HR ACTIVIST: Deputy Attorney-General Nadeem Azhar Siddiqui informed the bench that he received notice in a petition agitating confinement of a human rights activist on Thursday evening and could not seek instructions from the authorities.

Krishan Sharma, according to a writ petition filed by Advocate Noor Naz Agha on behalf of his mother, was arrested at the Naukot rangers check-post while travelling by a coach on March 21 and had been kept in detention since then by the federal investigation unit (FIU).

Advocate Agha submitted on Friday that no case had been registered against the detenu, nor had he been produced before a magistrate.

The bench asked the federal law officer to ascertain facts at the earliest and place them before it on July 8, when the petition would come up for a hearing.

On a petition filed by Advocate Syed Ghulam Shah, Justice Azizullah M. Memon ordered the production of a housewife, Shazia, and her children by her in-laws on July 7.

Petitioner Badruzzaman submitted in the petition that his daughter, Shazia, and her children were being detained by her husband, Ameen, and her in-laws.

PETITION DISMISSED: A Sindh High Court election tribunal dismissed as not maintainable on Friday a Muttahida Qaumi Movement candidate’s petition against Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal MNA Asadullah Bhutto.

Justice Zawwar Hussain Jaffery, who constituted the tribunal, observed that the petitioner had failed to verify the petition, affidavit and annextures properly as contemplated by the Representation of People Act, 1976.

A wide range of irregularities and corrupt practices had been alleged in the NA-253 Karachi polls without setting out particulars.

Under the law, all allegations of irregular and corrupt practices should be fully specified. In the absence of verification and particulars, there was no need to proceed with the petition further, the tribunal said.
