KARACHI, June 30: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan on Monday visited the Muslimabad area of Landhi to review the relief work of city government for the people of the epidemic-hit area, where hundreds of people were suffering from gastro-enteritis after apparently consuming contaminated water.

He inspected the medical and other relief camps, setup by the Health Department of the CDGK.

Executive district office, Health, Dr Ali Nawaz Shaikh, while briefing the City Nazim about the arrangements informed that sufficient quantity of all necessary medicines had been provided in the camps and patients were being treated at hospitals of Landhi and Korangi as well.

City Nazim directed the EDO Health that provision of all possible medical facilities to the epidemic-hit patients should be ensured.

Mr Khan, expressing grief over the loss of lives due to the epidemic, directed the officials concerned to collect and analyse the samples of water, ice and other consumer items, from the affected houses, to know the cause of the epidemic, and said that strict safety measures be adopted.

He was informed that potable water lines were examined at different points in the affected area but no signs of sewage-mixing were found. However, he was told that 32 samples of water had been collected by the Health Department of the CDGK for tests and action would be taken in the light of the report of the same. Officials of city government’s health department and those of the KWSB were monitoring the affairs, he was told.

The Nazim was informed that people had taken illegal water connections from the KWSB’s 3.8 inch dia lines, which might have caused leakage in these lines.

He was also told that the water mixed with chemical waste of a textile mill was disposed of into a nearby nullah, which might be the cause of water contamination.

Landhi Town Nazim Mohammad Shahid assured the area people that they could contact the town administration any time for the resolution of their complaints.
