NEW DELHI, June 20: India and Pakistan agreed in principle on Friday to resume stalled bus service between New Delhi and Lahore from July 1.

The decision was announced by transport department officials from both sides after two days of talks here.

“The tentative date for restarting the service is July 1,” Azfar Shafqat, leader of the Pakistani delegation and senior official of the Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC), told reporters.

Leader of the Indian delegation and chairman of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) A.J.S. Sahney added: “We are ready for July 1 and any day thereafter. It depends on how soon the crew on both sides get visa.”

The highly popular bi-weekly Delhi-Lahore service, started in 1999, was stopped soon after a militant attack on India’s parliament in December 2001.—AFP
