MINGORA, June 9: The NWFP government has allocated Rs1.083 million for the construction of protection walls along the river Swat.

Provincial minister for science and information technology Hussein Ahmad Kanju, while handing over a cheque to the authorities of irrigation department, Swat, here on Monday, directed them to restore the road links between Mingora and Kabal and Matta tehsils.

The road was closed for traffic about one month back as the river water had submerged the main Mingora-Kabal and Matta links.

The floods had inundated the fertile lands, washing the crops and vegetable farms, which caused heavy financial losses to the farmers.

The flood water had also entered the Swat police lines and the staff was shifted to the grassy ground and other police stations. The arms and ammunition had already been shifted to safer places in the district.

The residents of Matta and Kabal tehsils are facing several problems as these areas remain cut off from Mingora. They face difficulties in shifting patients to hospitals. The prices of daily-use items have increased.

The social and political circles have criticized the government for what they called its “inaction” and “cold response” to solve the flood-related problems.
