LAHORE, Dec 12: Major General Safdar Husain and Khalid Mahmood were elected as president and secretary of the Pakistan Amateur Athletic Federation (PAAF) for the next term of 2001-2005.

The elections were held by the Pakistan Olympic Association on Wednesday on the order of a civil judge Muhammad Saleem who had ordered that that elections of the federation be held within a month.

Earlier, the affairs in the PAAF had turned ugly on Oct 15 when a special general council meeting of the federation in Islamabad expressed its no confidence in president Maj Gen (Retd), Imtiaz Ali,  and secretary Col (Retd) Hanif Malik for committing financial irregularities.

Later a adhoc committee was formed headed by Brig Khalid Sajjad Khokhar.

However Imtiaz and Hanif got a stay order from the court that prevented the ad hoc committee from holding its first meeting in Lahore on Oct 24.

However, the civil judge announced its final verdict on Nov 3, instructing the POA to hold the elections in one month period.

The POA elections committee headed by Khawaja Farooq Saeed conducted the elections. Aaqil Shah, Khaliq Khan and Nawab Kasuri were the members of the elections committee.

The POA secretary, Mohammad Latif Butt, alleged that the previous body of the PAAF committed financial irregularities which paved the way to impose adhoc on it.

The newly elected secretary Khalid Mahmood said that all the factions should work collectively to improve the deteriorating standard of the game in the country.
