WASHINGTON, Dec 7: Lashkar-i-Taiba is among the 39 groups which the US State Department said on Thursday had been placed on a “terrorist exclusion list” that gives powers to the US authorities to deport their members or deny them visas.

The Lashkar is already on the department’s list of “other terrorist organizations”, which also includes Jaish-i-Mohammad.

There is a separate list of “designated terrorist organizations” in which the only Pakistan-based organization named is Harkatul Mujahideen.

Attorney General John Ashcroft had asked the State Department to put 46 groups on the new list, which is required under the USA PATRIOT Act signed by President George W. Bush on Oct. 26. The State Department listed 33 of those and added six of its own, a State Department official said.

Announcing the terrorist exclusion list, State Department deputy spokesman Philip Reeker said: “It is by no means the last. We will continue to expand the list as we identify and confirm additional entities that provide support to terrorists.”
