KARACHI, May 24 Mansoor Saeed, a veteran Marxist and one of the founding members of the noted theatre group Dastak, died here on Monday. He was 68.

He left a wife, a noted educationist; daughter Sania Saeed, a well-known theatre and TV performer, and son Ahmer Saeed, a former captain of under-19 cricket team.He was laid to rest at a graveyard in Block-19 Gulistan-i-Jauhar after his funeral prayer at a local mosque.

Born in Delhi in 1942, Mr Saeed, also a writer and translator, joined the Communist Party of India with Prakash Karat, currently the general secretary of CPI (M), in 1964. He moved to Pakistan in 1970 for his marriage and joined the Communist Party of Pakistan (CPP) in 1974.

A large number of people from different walks of life, including leaders and workers of the CPP and other political parties, attended the funeral of Mansoor Saeed, who was known for his integrity.

Those who attended the funeral included Imdad Qazi, Dr Mazhar, Salim Akhter, Hussain Nasir, Jabbar Khattak and Khadim Thaeem.

The family said Mr Saeed was admitted to a hospital near his residence in Gulistan-i-Jauhar early in the morning and he died in the afternoon.

The noted playwright was associated with a TV channel as a script editor.

The Communist Party of Pakistan will hold a condolence meeting at the PMA House on Friday at 5.30pm.
