TOBA TEK SINGH, March 30: Pirmahal police arrested four accused out of 60 who had attacked a police raiding party and the police station on March 3 at Chak 719-GB.
The arrested were identified as Chaudhry Muhammad Aslam Jat, Syed Zahoor Hussain, Muhammad Nadeem and Abdul Hameed.
Rajana police had raided the village and arrested Muhammad Ashraf, but village lumberdar Nabi Ahmad Bajwa asked the police not to arrest him as he was not an accused. He also told police that he was rather a complainant in a motorcycle rickshaw snatching case.
Later, harsh words were exchanged between the lumberdar and Rajana SHO Khizer Hayat Wahla, prompting the police to take Bajwa also into custody. Umar Nawaz, the son of lumberdar, chased the police van in his jeep while hundreds of villagers followed them in their tractor trollies. Near Pirmahal Imambargah, Umer opened fire on police van with his Kalashnikov.
Meanwhile, the police party entered the Pirmahal police station to save themselves from the mob. The villagers started pelting stones on police station, but the police resorted to aerial firing to disperse the enraged crowd. After some time, the DCO, DPO, district Nazim, PPP leader Khalid Kharal and UC Nazim and son-in-law of lumberdar Chaudhry Shafqat Rasool reached the police station. Later, the matter was settled and the lumberdar and his son were allowed to go home. However, a case had been registered against 60 villagers on the charge of attacking the police station while a gunman of lumberdar’s son was arrested the same day.
Due to Muharram, police had not taken action against the 60 people booked in the case.
