KARACHI, March 30: Elected representatives of Lyari Town on Sunday staged a sit-in near Gadani bus stop, in Lea Market area, as part of their ongoing campaign for the shifting of transport business from the residential areas of the town.
The campaign entered its fourth day on Sunday with the Town’s Nazim and Naib Nazims leading the sit-in by the councillors.
Talking to Dawn, the Nazim, Abdul Khaliq Juma, lamented that the transporters had made the life of local residents miserable by sparing not a single road for ordinary traffic. He said that their upcountry transport means had virtually taken over the entire area of Lea Market.
Referring to the usual practice of haphazard parking by the transport operators in the middle of Sheedi Village, the Nazim said that traffic police were playing the role of a silent spectator.
He said that the ‘transport mafia’ reigned supreme as there was no check on their illegal activities. No action has so far been taken against them despite complaints repeatedly lodged with the higher authorities, he regretted.
