Egypt to import 4.5m tons of wheat

ISLAMABAD, March 26: Egypt has shown its interest to import 4.5 million tons of wheat from Pakistan.

The interest was shown by a three-member Egyptian delegation headed by Dr. Youssef H. El Daoudi, Under Secretary of State for Plant Quarantine, Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, who called on chairman PARC Dr Badaruddin Soomro here on Wednesday.

The delegation is on a seven-day visit to Pakistan to see the wheat quality standards as Egypt wants to import wheat from Pakistan. In this connection they have visited various institutions in Karachi, Multan, Faisalabad, Lahore and Islamabad, engaged in research and quality control.

During the meeting, the delegation expressed full satisfaction over Pakistan’s research and quality control system.

Dr Badaruddin Soomro, while highlighting the research activities of the PARC said that the Grain Testing Laboratories would be in operation near future, which would help to improve the quality of the products according to the quality control specification of various countries.

He assured the delegation that Pakistan has an excellent production system and our wheat is best in the world.

Dr Soomro informed the delegation that this year Pakistan would get bumper wheat crop, which will exceed its targets and would be exported to any country which is interested in buying.

Dr Youssef H. El Daoudi said that Egypt wants to import 4.5 million tons of wheat from Pakistan. He said that they are fully satisfied with Pakistan’s wheat production and quality control system.

PASSCO: The Pakistan Agriculture Storage and Services Corp (PASSCO) had sold 300,000 tons of wheat for export at Rs8,625 ($149.30) a ton, officials said on Wednesday.

“We have accepted offers of seven buyers, who matched our minimum selling price of Rs8,625 per ton,” a senior agriculture ministry official told Reuters.

“However, we will pay them (buyers) back a maximum of Rs2,500 per ton after they made the shipments, under the government’s export refund policy.” The reimbursement scheme helps buyers cover costs.—APP/Reuters
