LAHORE: Proposal for sanitary staff

Published February 16, 2003

LAHORE,Feb 15: The City District Government is actively considering the grant of Rs100 per month as medical allowance to its 6,500 sanitary workers.

The grant of the allowance is being considered in view of the fact that the sanitary workers have to work under hazardous condition and most of them have contracted different kinds of diseases due to handling of solid waste, dust and pollution.

A sizable number of them have been engaged on contract basis on the fixed salary of around Rs3,500 per month with no prospects of its increase with the passage of time.

The number of workers engaged on contract basis is gradually on the rise. The vacancies created as a sequel to the retirement of the sanitary workers, recruited on regular basis, are being filled by those hired on contract basis. — Reporter
