JOHANNESBURG, Feb 11: For a man who was not meant to be at the World Cup, Ian Harvey had a major — and immediate — impact during Australia’s opening Group ‘A’ match against Pakistan on Tuesday.

While Andrew Symonds won the Man-of-the-Match award with a scintillating innings of 143 not out to set up Australia’s 82-run win at the Wanderers, the 32-year-old all-rounder claimed a wicket with his first ball.

Harvey also ended the day as the first bowler to take four wickets in an innings at the tournament, bowling his 9.3 overs for 58 runs.

The Victorian’s first-ball success was earned when he sent down a disguised slow off-cutter, inducing Saleem Elahi to play too early and loop a high catch to Brett Lee at wide mid-on.

Harvey, who has never played a Test but has 44 one-day caps for his country, was not included in the original World Cup squad, but was called up when Shane Watson had to pull out with a back injury.—Reuters
