KARACHI, Jan 5: Garbage is piling up everywhere in the streets and footpaths of Malir due to the failure of town administration in prompt lifting of waste, trash, rubbish and other disposable substances.

Apart from this, abandoned construction material at many places has added to the miseries of residents of Khokhrapar, Saudabad, Malir City and many other localities.

The affected residents have complained that sanitation staff did not collect garbage regularly. Most of the containers, procured and made available by the now-defunct KMC to the sanitation staff for dumping the garbage meant for disposal, have also disappeared.

The vehicles used to transport garbage containers can be seen parked at or near heaps of garbage but are not operated as if they require some sort of repair.

In some localities, e.g. Mohammadi Market and main Liaquat Market, sweepers have been hired by the concerned market committees for cleaning pavements and shop-fronts. The private sweepers collect garbage in their assigned area and dispose it of at the nearest open space in the neighbourhood. This has created intolerably unhygienic condition in the affected localities.

Some residents of the town moaned that the Nazim and other elected representatives were ensuring prompt and proper cleanliness in the areas of their choice only.

They pointed out that the situation in Gharibabad, Saudia Colony, and Khokhrapar E-1 and E-II areas had worsened.

Sewage has accumulated on Malir-Khokhrapar road affecting different localities. As no measures have so far been taken to flush it out, the stagnant water has become hatchery of insects, mainly mosquitoes. Condition of this road has particularly deteriorated because venders and stall-holders of the weekly bazaars in the locality dispose of their waste along it.

Residents of Saudia Colony complained that the town administration had refused to tackle sanitation problems of the area on the plea that the colony had not been transferred to the KMC by KDA.
