TOBA TEK SINGH, Nov 26: An 85-foot wide breach in the Jhang branch canal was plugged after midnight on Sunday by the irrigation department staff and villagers.
The breach had occurred on Sunday morning and destroyed standing crops on hundreds of acres of land in Chak 378-JB Fattowal and 385-JB Salahrian.
DACOITS CAPTURED: Villagers and police captured two dacoits while their third accomplice escaped on Monday after several hours’ besiege of a field in Chak 328-JB Trandi.
According to villagers, three dacoits set up a picket on the Toba-Gojra Road at Sehri near the village and started looting passers-by. In the meantime, some bicyclists coming from their villages to town informed the farmers of dacoits’ looting spree. The dacoits took to their heels when the villagers followed them. They took refuge in a sugarcane field. Some people informed the city police which rushed to the scene and lay siege to the field. Two of the dacoits surrendered at around noon while their third accomplice made good his escape.
ACCIDENT: A woman died and her minor son seriously wounded in an accident on Monday near Chak 295-GB Barianwala on the Toba-Chichawatni Road, some five kilometres from here.
Ishrat and her five-year-old son Umar Farooq were waiting for a conveyance at the village bus stop when a speeding pick-up ran over them. The woman died on the spot. The injured boy was admitted to the DHQ hospital in critical condition.
Sadar police have registered a case against the absconding driver.
