LARKANA, Jan 31: The activists of some political parties, with the heirs of a victim of police brutality, Qurban Jat, here on Friday held a demonstration outside the district council hall when the council session was going on.

They also staged a sit-in outside the office of the district police officer.

They demanded early arrest of the absconding former SHO of Rasheed Waggan police, Abdul Majeed Brohi, who was nominated in the murder case of Mr Jat.

The protesters dispersed after the DPO assured them of justice and early arrest of Brohi.

The protesters, led by Athar Soomro and others, included activists of the Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz, Sindh National Front and Pakistan People’s Party-SB.

On Jan 16, a police team forcibly entered the house of Mr Jat in Shah Murad village to arrest him for recovery of a debt amount, on the complaint of a villager, Mehar Jat.

The situation grew tense when the police began dragging Mr Jat and the villagers protested.

The police opened fire and one of the bullets hit Mr Jat in his forehead.

He was admitted to the Chandka Medical College Hospital where he died on Jan 20 after going through a surgery.

His heirs nominated the former SHO and three policemen in the case. Since then the former SHO is absconding.

PASSCO: Two members of the National Assembly, Khalid Iqbal Memon and Shahid Hussain Bhutto from Larkana, demanded the government to re-establish a permanent office of Passco for the unhindered purchase of rice and wheat.

In a letter to the prime minister and the federal minister for agriculture, the MNAs from NA-206 and NA-207 said that the previous government had established a permanent office of Passco in 1978, which was in operation till 1985 when it was abruptly closed.

They pointed out in October 2000, Passco had opened certain paddy purchase centres in Larkana district but they were closed down even though they had been making a profit.

They wondered as to why only Larkana was being deprived of such centres when they were functional in Balochistan, Khairpur, Sukkur, and other districts of the country.

They demanded the government to re-open the Passco office on a permanent basis.

PROTEST: The retired employees of the Larkana Municipal Corporation demonstrated outside the district council hall on Thursday in protest against the LMC management for ignoring them and holding up their pensions and other incentives.
