KARACHI, Jan 27: Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ibad has stressed the need for preparing a comprehensive master plan for Karachi on water supply and sewerage.
During a briefing regarding Karachi Water and Sewerage Board, held at Governor House, Dr. Ishrat expressed surprise over lack of master planning.
He regretted that only 0.25 million consumers as against 1.2 million consumers of the board pay their bills and a large number of people were not registered with the KWSB.
The governor said not only the KWSB’s functionaries but the people at large will have to cooperate and play their due role for bringing an improvement in the system.
He directed the KWSB officials to adopt consumer-friendly measures and work on an emergency basis for an improved water supply and sewerage disposal. He said water supply system should be just and transparent.
Dr. Ishrat said in case there was a water shortage, it be equally shared by every area. Similarly the benefits of positive steps should also reach everyone equally.
Meanwhile, the DCO Karachi, Shafiqur Rehman Paracha, convened a meeting of municipal officers of all the 18 towns and decided that efforts be made to improve the city’s sanitary system.
The TMOs will personally supervise the work of cleanliness in their respective jurisdictions and will have a daily two-hour inspection visits in the morning. They will pay more attention to roads and streets badly affected by insanitation and submit a daily performance report of their Towns to the DCO Secretariat.
The DCO Karachi too will submit a weekly report to the governor regarding sanitary conditions in each Town.
Shafiq Paracha told the meeting that during his recent visit to the city, the governor had declared the cleanliness conditions as unsatisfactory.
The DCO said that the cleanliness campaign carried out under the supervision of Town Nazims did not prove successful.
According to a decision, the areas affected by insanitation, would be taken up one by one on a weekly basis for improving their sanitary conditions.—APP
