LAHORE, March 16: The three types of committees formed by the Punjab government for making arrangements for the general election have started functioning.

The committees have been formed at district, divisional and provincial levels.

The district level committee is headed by DCO, the divisional level by commissioner and the provincial level by the additional chief secretary. The district and divisional committees include local election commission staff, police chiefs and members of law-enforcement agencies whereas the provincial committee comprises the provincial election commissioner, the IGP and LEAs senior members.

The provincial committee met on Saturday and discussed various issues like how and when to give official vehicles to the election staff and the monitoring teams. Another issue was how to maintain law and order and make candidates follow the code of conduct issued by the Election Commission.

It was felt that the EC must widely publicise the code of conduct so as to create general awareness about it. Officials said it would be difficult to enforce the code of conduct without letting people and candidates fully know about it.

The meeting discussed how to identify sensitive polling stations and how to maintain law and order around them on the polling day. — Staff Reporter
