LAHORE, Jan 25: Army and Wapda with 211 and 180 points retained the men and women’s National Athletics Championships titles at the Wapda Sports Complex, Kot Lakhpat on Saturday.
On the last day, 10 finals were decided including four in the men’s events and six in the women. Army won three golds in the men’s to raise its tally to 13.
Wapda claimed only a single gold medal in the men’s 4 x 400m relay to make the aggregate of seven golds.
Ghulam Shabbir clinched the first gold for Army in the hammer throw with a distance of 62.2 metres.
Mumtaz Ahmad clocked 14.3 seconds for the second gold of Army in 110m hurdles race. Abdul Rasheed (Railways) gave Mumtaz a good chase as he finished 14.2 seconds followed by Muhammad Shah (Wapda) 14.6 seconds.
Atta Miran of Army with a good start to finish won the third gold for Army in the 1500m race with a time of three minutes 56 seconds.
Wapda got their solitary gold of the day in 4x400m men’s relay. Their quartet, Basit, Saghir, Sajid and Inam Ali achieved a timing of three minutes 13 secs.
In women’s category, Wapda were upstaged by Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF) Wah and Police. Wapda, out of total six events of the day, could clinch half as POF and Police claimed two and one gold, respectively.
Noshi Parveen, won the 100m hurdles race, clocking 15.1 secs to give Wapda their first gold of the day. Shabana Khattak (NWFP) and Fauzia Aurangzeb (Army) got the second and third position, respectively.
Shabana Kauser threw the javelin to a distance of 40.21m to claim second gold of Wapda. Yasmin Naz also from Wapda and Parveen Akhtar from Railways got second and third position, respectively.
Wapda’s last gold came through 4x400m relay when Gulnaz Ara, Shugufta Parveen, Saira Fazal and Nadia achieved the timing of four minutes 11.8 seconds. Railways came in second, while and Sindh finished third.
POF Wah, unable to clinch any gold medals in the last three days ended up with the satisfaction of claiming two on the final day.
Sumera Zahoor covered 1500m distance in four minutes 51.4 seconds to win a gold for POF, followed by Gulnaz Ara (Wapda) and Sajida Ramzan (Army).
Naveeda Malik clinched a gold in the high jump with a jumping to the height of 1.48 metres. Rozina Shafqat and Noshi Parveen both from Wapda remained second and third, respectively.
Erum Khanum who earned all three gold for Police got her final and third in the triple jump with a leap of 11.08m, beating Rozina Shafqat (Wapda) 10.44m and Ghazala Sardar (Wapda) 10.29m by clear margins. Erum had earlier claimed golds in the in 100 and 200m races.
