KARACHI, Jan 24: The cargo handling activity at the Karachi port is expected to gather fresh momentum as nine ships are due to arrive on Saturday, according to KPT sources.
Most of the ships are coming to unload and load containers, while some others are carrying chemicals and steel coils.
Berthing activity at the wharves was slow owing to delayed arrivals. As a result, three ships, Hammurabi, Lena to unload and load containers and general cargo and Isbel Knutsen to load molasses were berthed.
Three ships, Kota Teguh, Iron-D and Sorena sailed out, while Hammurabi, Mercs Kirinda, Multan and Sinar Bontang are due to sail out on Saturday.
A total tonnage of 48,410 tons comprising 23,951 tons of export cargo including 7,600 tons of molasses and 24,459 tons of import tonnage was handled.
The Following ships are due on Saturday: NCC Najd, Ievoli Shine, with chemicals, E.O.S.I, Med Tai Chung, Jamila, PONL Singapore and Mar Challenger, with containers, Sea Dream and Prince, with steel and steel coils respectively.

Berth occupancy was maintained at 100 per cent as nine ships, Verily, S-Pioneer, Safmarine Vinson, Francisca Schulte, Asante, Mass Merit, Chemrald Luna, Yodogawa and Devon were at the wharves busy in loading/discharging wheat, containers, coal, chemicals and furnace oil.
Total tonnage handled soared to 79,452 tons comprising 42,732 tons of import cargo and 6,720 tons of export tonnage, inclusive of cargo carried in 1,050 containers.
Three ships, Chemrald Luna, Asante and Safmarine Vinson sailed out, while Devon and Yodogawa were expected to leave the port on Friday.
MSC Oman, NCC Najd, St Katharinen and Bador were expected to take berths at QICT, Marginal Wharf, Fotco and EVTL respectively.
