KARACHI, Jan 17: World Bank adviser on institutional development, human resources and training system William V Mayville has expressed his satisfaction over the working of Large Taxpayers Unit (LTU).

During his visit to LTU on Friday, the World Bank representative, who was accompanied by member, human resources management, CBR, Zafar Aziz Osmani, also took a round of different sections of LTU. The Unit is a pilot project of greater reform measures of the CBR.

The visit of Mr Mayville is of great importance because a follow up visit of a larger IMF team is expected in the last week of this month.

The visiting IMF team members are expected to evaluate and review the economic performance of the country during the first half of current fiscal.

However, financial circles believe the IMF team will also caution the political government not to deviate from the course adopted by the military government in the past.

LTU director general Akhtar Jamil Khan took the World Bank representative and CBR member to the visit of open architecture of LTU offices. They saw the working of different officers at their work stations.

The LTU DG briefed the World Bank representative about the vision, mission, statements, strategy and objectives of creation of LTU with a view to delivering quality service to the taxpayer.

Akhtar Jamil on the occasion said greater emphasis was being laid down on voluntary compliance, increase in productivity by providing high quality work environment and adequate compensation to revenue collectors.

The LTU director general also briefed the visitors about the functional job descriptions of various offices and the selection criteria of the officers appointed in the LTU. While making selection, he said, officers’ integrity, competence and friendly attitude to taxpayers were taken as a criterion.

During his visit to different sections of LTU, the WB representative had an open interaction with tax collectors of the Unit. He also discussed the human resource management initiatives, compensation package, working environment and responses of the taxpayers to the CBR’s reform measures.
