SIALKOT, Jan 12: Local industrialists have protested against the ‘temporary’ suspension of gas supply to their factories.
The SNGPL stopped supplying gas to local factories on Jan 9 in the wake of an increased domestic demand in severe weather conditions.
SCCI vice-president Mohammad Ashraf Malik said the export-oriented surgical, leather and soccer ball industries had been worst hit by the SNGPL move. “We would not be able to deliver on our export orders in time due to unavailability of gas,” he added.
He feared that hundreds of orders of the foreign importers might be cancelled. He said the export sector would suffer if the situation was allowed to continue.
A spokesman for the SNGPL said that the company had no option but to temporarily disconnect the supply of gas to industrial units due to the low pressure of Sui Gas in the pipelines and high consumption in the winter season.
Meanwhile, congested localities in Sialkot and Daska are being deprived of gas for several hours daily.
GUJRANWALA: Hundreds of daily-wagers have become jobless due to Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited’s decision to suspend the supply of gas to industrial units in the wake of an increased domestic demand in the current cold spell.
Backing a factory owners’ protest against suspension of gas supply, they proposed that a partial gas supply to industrial units be restored.
When contacted in this regard, the SNGPL regional manager said that a temporary suspension of the supply of gas to industrial units was necessary to continue the supply to domestic consumers. He said the industrial gas supply would be restored soon.
Meanwhile, residents also expressed their resentment over gas-loadshedding in various localities of the city and demanded that uninterrupted gas supply should be restored immediately.
