KARACHI, Jan 11: The process of admission to the Bachelor of Computer Science programme at some selected colleges will begin on Jan 18, with the distribution of admission forms.

According to sources in the Sindh education department, six colleges have initially been identified and provided with necessary fund for introducing computer courses at degree level. After the required affiliation drill, the University of Karachi has given a go-ahead to the D.J. Science College and the National College, while cases of the remaining four colleges would be cleared within a couple of days.

The colleges, which would launch teaching behind schedule as far as private colleges are concerned, would have to conduct extra classes to fulfil the course credit hours requirement as set by the university for the examinations of BCS candidates of its affiliated colleges.

Though the university has allowed an intake of up to 80 to 50 students, respectively, in the case of D.J. and the National colleges, the concerned principals have decided to initially admit 40 students each, so that things could remain manageable.

The Govt College for Commerce and Economics, Sir Syed Girls College, Khurshid Girls College and the Government College, Stadium Road, are awaiting the KU recognition. An advertisement, however, would be floated soon in connection with the programme, said an official in the education department.

Sources said that students would be charged a sum of Rs500 per month in addition to the amount being charged from other degree class students.

Students having secured 50 per cent marks in the intermediate science (pre-engineering and general) or general group and other equivalent exams with Statistics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects would be eligible for admission.

Applicants would have to take an aptitude test for admission, while the merit list would be based on weightage of marks obtained by applicants in the aptitude test (50 per cent), HSC examination (40 per cent) and SSC examinations (10 per cent).

A centralized aptitude test would be held in the third week of January.
