THIS is with reference to the news item ‘US General demoted for lavish travel, spending’ (Nov 14). This goes to show that a truly democratic state, the essence of which is equality, does not compromise on its principles and where the laws are equally and uniformly applied to everybody; be it a general, a senior government official or even the president.

Unfortunately, what happens in Pakistan is in stark contrast to the above. We can at least try to adopt some of the good prevalent in the other societies of the world. The case of Gen William Ward, the general who has been demoted, would not be a bad example to look to in this regard.
