LAHORE, Jan 9: There was no letup in the biting cold on a foggy Thursday here with the Met office now expecting the cold spell to persist for another two weeks.

On Thursday, minimum temperature fell to 5.4 degrees Celsius while the maximum was no more than 10.1. Humidity was as high as 92 per cent in the morning and 80 per cent in the evening.

Because of the fog, visibility was reduced to one kilometre for the better part of the day from 7.30am to 2pm. It increased to two kilometres after 2pm.

According to the meteorological office, fog will reduce visibility to 500 metres by 11pm. It is expected to clear by 10am on Friday, when visibility will improve to 1.5km.

The Met office also predicted some rain in the Northern Areas in the next one or two days. However, no wet spell is in sight in the plains.

According to a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) press release, all its 278 domestic flights during the first week of January were affected due to severe weather conditions. Out of the 215 from Lahore, 26 were cancelled, 15 diverted and 71 delayed. As many as 103 flights suffered “consequential delays” across the domestic network.
