BAJAUR, Jan 6: Elders of the Mamond tribe voluntarily handed over heavy arms and ammunition to the political authorities of the Bajaur Agency here on Monday.

Officials said Malik Aziz Khan, Malik Shah Terkhan, Malik Gulzada and Malik Saeed Khan surrendered Russian and US-made arms to the authorities.

The weapons included 30 Russian-made rocket-propelled launchers, 40 rockets, 10 missiles, 16 anti-aircraft guns, 10 anti-tank mines, 41 anti-personnel mines and seven long range machine guns. The tribal chieftains said that some Afghan leaders gifted these weapons during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan.

They demanded of the government to expel Afghan refugees from the area and launch an operation to eliminate illegal arms from the agency.

They said that Afghan leaders still possessed huge arms including, anti-aircraft missiles which could create a law and order situation in the area.
