PESHAWAR, Jan 6: During its drive against obscenity and vulgarity, the Peshawar police arrested 35 shopkeepers for allegedly selling such pornographic material in the Karkhano Market and confiscated a huge quantity of CDs and other material.

The Hayatabad police said a heavy contingent accompanied by Nazim Union Council Regi, Ali Jan raided the market on Sunday and arrested 35 shopkeepers for selling pornographic material and registered cases against them.

Police claimed that 1,107 CDs, 209 video cassettes and 1,200 posters had been confiscated during the operation.

Later, a press release issued by the police department said that the operation was conducted on the special directives of the Chief Capital City Police, DIG Tanvirul Haq Sipra.

The CCCP ordered the police that the drive should continue till the complete removal of this trade. He asked public to boycott such products and help police in this cause. He warned the people involved in promoting obscenity and vulgarity to quit the business otherwise they would be dealt with an iron hand.

The police started the drive on the special directives of the provincial government.

Police claimed that in the first phase of the drive a large number of local people, including owners of video shops, handed over a big quantity of such material to the police department voluntarily.—APP
