PESHAWAR, Jan 6: A close relative of a former chief justice of the Peshawar High Court was kidnapped, apparently for ransom, at the Ring Road near Landei Akhund Ahmad here on Sunday night.

Police sources told Dawn that Yousuf Ali, SDO in the Works Department, Kohat, and a nephew of former chief justice of Peshawar High Court Abdur Rehman Khan, was coming from his village Batagram, Shabqadar, along with his wife and 13-year-old son Ismail Yousuf.

The family was going to their residence in Hayatabad township via Ring Road. When they reached near Landei Akhund Ahmad locality, about seven armed men stopped their car and forced Yousuf Ali and his son Ismail Yousuf to disembark from the car.

The kidnappers dragged both the men into their car and fled, the sources said, and added that later the kidnappers freed Yousuf Ali on the Ring Road as he resisted after seeing a police mobile.

The police mobile chased kidnappers but failed to foil the kidnapping attempt. The sources said that the kidnappers were speaking the Afridi-accent Pashto.

FIRING: Two men opened fire on the residence of Deputy Counsel-General of Afghanistan Hafeezullah Mujadidi and injured an on-duty security guard in Hayatabad township on Sunday night.

Witnesses told Dawn that two snipers opened fire on the residence of Mujadidi and injured the security guard Gul Hakim. He was rushed to the Hayatabad Medical Complex, where his condition is stated to be stable.

Senior police officials the spot immediately after the incident and ordered the Hayatabad police to seal off the area. But the snippers escaped. Mr Mujadidi told police that during the firing he was not at his home.

The injured security guard sepoy Gul Hakim told police that he had an old enmity with Nazir, a resident of Sikandar Khan Dheri, Charsadda, who along with his accomplice Wahid opened fire on him.
