KARACHI, Jan 1: The provincial government withdrew on Wednesday a criminal case against Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad.

The case (FIR No 528/92) against the newly-appointed governor and others was registered in 1992 by the New Karachi police under sections 147, 148, 149, 163, 427 and 342 of PPC and section 17 (3) of the Enforcement of Hudood Ordinance on the complaint of Husain Ahmed, son of Mohammed Umer.

The deputy district attorney (DDA) of District Central moved the application for withdrawal of the case against Dr Ishratul Ibad in the court of an additional district and sessions judge, Central, Ahmed Nawaz Shaikh.

The judge granted the application of the DDA, who submitted that the applicant was not named in the FIR and he had no role in the incident.

Dr Ibad and eight others were shown absconders in the final charge-sheet of the case submitted before the court in 1993. Dr Safdar Baqri, Azhar Ahmed Mohammed Raza, Chaudhri Arshad, Aslam Kalia, Iftikhar, Rehman and sub-inspector Tahir Khan were the other absconders.

Tayyab Yazdani and Abbas Ali, two of the accused, were arrested in the case, which pertained to ransacking of shops and looting of goods in sector 5-E of New Karachi.

ARRAIGNED: Police submitted the final chargesheet in the case against Younus Khan, a leader of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement and the party’s only MPA in the Sindh Assembly.

The Haqiqi MPA was arrested on Dec 10 for his alleged involvement in the murder of a cab driver in July this year. He remained in police custody for interrogation till Dec 24, when he was finally given in judicial custody.

According to the chargesheet, a Haqiqi worker, Babar alias Babri, was arrested for killing the cab driver. During interrogation, he disclosed that he committed the offence on the orders of the party’s top leadership.

An additional district and sessions judge, Malir, Abdul Malik, issued on Tuesday non-bailable warrants for the arrest of the top leadership of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement, including party chief Afaq Ahmed, in a murder case.

The judge ordered police to arrest the Haqiqi chief, general secretary Aamir Khan, Imtiaz Koti and Danish and produce them in the court on Jan 7.
