CID, other agencies join Daska probe

LAHORE, Dec 27: The Crimes Investigation Department (CID) and other intelligence agencies have joined the probe into the attack on a church in Daska.

Police sources said they joined the investigation after clues to the involvement of some sectarian organizations were found.

A joint CID and intelligence agencies team was questioning the suspects already in police custody, Gujranwala DIG Malik Iqbal told Dawn.

He said the suspects had not been handed over to the agencies but they were being quizzed for more information.

Six people, including prayer leader Maulvi Afzal of a mosque in the village where the incident took place, are in police custody. Afzal has been nominated as main accused in the FIR registered on the complaint of Aslam Parvez, one of the 14 people who sustained injuries besides three killed in the attack.

The complainant claimed that Maulvi Afzal, allegedly a Jaish-i-Muhammad activist, had asked several times to kill the Christians.

The DIG said clues found from the arrested men indicated involvement of five more people in the attack.

“We are investigating and would hopefully be able to make a breakthrough soon,” the DIG said, adding raids were being conducted to arrest the felons.

Sialkot DPO Shahid Iqbal said some more people, residents of the village where the incident took place, have been taken into custody and were being questioned.

“They are suspects and could not be linked to any sectarian or Jehadi organization until proved,” he added.

A resident of Daska told this scribe by phone that a heavy police contingent had been deployed in the village to avoid clash.

The administration was making announcements through loudspeakers urging people to remain calm and inform police if they found any activity around.

He said there was a curfew like situation here.
